Thanksgiving Dune Sledding Adventure

On Black Friday, my sister and I continued a Schwarz family Thanksgiving dune sledding tradition. We woke up early with all the savvy deal hunters, but instead of heading to the mall, we drove four hours into the desert.

Towing our sleigh, “Shelby the Rocket,” with green ribbon, we hiked 1.5-miles up the giant sand castle. The sun was much hotter than years past, but we came prepared with gloves, scarves and jackets for the top.

As soon as we reached the highest peak, we took off our shoes and dug our toes into the cold sand. The temperature dropped quickly as we threw down a few practice runs. Thank goodness for my Forest and Waves camper blanket!

We enjoyed some refreshments and leftover turkey between turns.

Alas, we boarded “Shelby the Rocket” together for our final descent. I sat in back and steered with my legs, sending waves of sand into our faces as we picked up some serious speed. We agreed it was our best ride yet!

As we hiked back to the car in socks, we discussed our plans for dune sledding into our golden years. I’m so grateful for this little lady and all the adventures we share together. I couldn’t imagine a better way to celebrate a holiday for giving thanks.

Hey, we saw you guys at the dunes! My boyfriend and I were the couple with the dog walking out as you were walking in. We didn’t make it to the top that day because Mahoney, our pit bull, was overheating. Glad you made it though! From there we continued on a road trip that eventually took us to the Salton Sea, Slab City, and Salvation Mountain… Stops that were inspired by your previous posts. Talk about a coincidence! Thanks for the road trip ideas, and keep up the good work. 🙂
