Jackie Boone, Co-Leader of Getaway Camp, Wilderness First Aid

What inspired you to learn Wilderness First Aid? What was your favorite part of the experience?

I received my Wilderness First Aid training because I was an Outdoor Camp Counselor for high-school kids. I loved meeting like-minded people, and it gave me confidence, knowing that I was much better equipped to handle anything that happened in the woods or on one of the week-long trips I was leading.

Have you ever used your skills in the field? Tell us about it.

Yes! In addition to having an overall better understanding and confidence in the wilderness, I also had to use my skills for a camper who injured her ankle on a trip. My fellow counselors and I were able to make a splint for her ankle and safely help her off the mountain. I cannot emphasize enough how good it felt to be able to help someone, especially a someone I was responsible for.
